Dr Alexia van der Velde

She completed a diploma in Obstetrics from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2003.

For the following 8 years, Dr Alexia worked in trauma units throughout Cape Town and England and locumed in general practice and occupational health.

In addition to this, between the births of her two children, in 2007 and 2010, she used hydrotherapy and massage to treat babies with birth trauma and taught swimming to babies aged 3 to 24 months, at Laura Sevenus Swimming Tuition in Cape Town.

In 2011 she received her certificate in Integrative and Functional Medicine through the Family Medicine department of the University of Stellenbosch and was invited to tutor on the course in 2012 and 2013.

From 2012 till 2017 Dr Alexia trained 4th and 5th-year medical students at UCT in compassionate care, mindfulness and birth support.

She has practised in an Integrative Medicine private practice since 2012, first based in Hout Bay and then in Gardens, Cape Town.

Dr Alexia’s special interests are in;

  • Chronic fatigue, chronic pain and chronic mood disorders
  • Mind body medicine with a focus in mindfulness practice
  • Gut disorders and their impact on multiple systems in the body
  • Immune dysfunction and autoimmune diseases
  • Hormonal imbalance

Outside of work, Dr Alexia loves to spend quality time with her daughters…to play in nature, on the mountain, hiking or running along a trail or simply relaxing at home with their multiple dogs and cats. She explores creativity through art, dancing and singing. She feels every day has something new to discover and aims to never stop searching and learning.
